Sandy River Airport
My investors and the building owner met me at the airport so everyone could get acquainted with one another and the airport. We took some time discussing business, and then the rest of the day was all for flying! There wasn't a lot of modeling activity today, but there was something going on all the time. After watching Kurt Cook and Paul LaPlante from Fromco Scale Avionics fly their well loved Stinger 120, we were invited to join the airport owner for a Barbecue. Paul later took some time to point out that his Stinger has its wing clipped down from 84 inches to 72 inches. With a Brisson 40cc gas engine and a 20 x 10 prop, the model is old school and damn cool. Paul used 2 Fromco 2600 mAh Li-Ion packs in parrallel through a Wolverine switch. Separate Sahara regulators then drop the voltage down for the receiver and provide redundant power leads to the receiver. The model was no 3D aerobat, but looked like a lot of fun.

Glen Thornton was flying his JK Aerotech Big T when he lost radio in a vertical dive with full power. The post flight inspection indicated the battery had disconnected in flight, but thankfully, the model experienced little damage despite burying itself in the dirt up to the firewall.

There were a few Ultralights that came and went, there was a military rescue helicopter cruising up and down the runway looking for someone on the river below. We were even treated to a Bald Eagle thermalling up and down the runway. After the Bald Eagle departed, a red tailed hawk flew by to show off in the lift, and at that point I wished I had a thermal glider with me. I think this location is going to prove to be quite nice for the glider guys!

Scott McCarty helped tremendously by being the trigger man today with my new camera. I am very thrilled with the results I am getting with my Nikon D60. We spent some time working on wide angle hovering shots with the MSH Protos 500, trying to keep the mountain in view. The results speak for themselves. The combination of a good camera, a good location, and a bright color scheme makes everything just pop of the page/screen. I look forward to documenting all the goings on at the Sandy River Airport with this new tool!

until next time, happy landings
